Il Castello Nobili Vitelleschi

The fortified palace of the Nobili Vitelleschi family, a landmark of Labro's medieval heritage

A Fortified Palace in the Heart of Labro

The Castello Nobili Vitelleschi stands as one of Labro's most significant historical monuments. This palazzo forte — a fortified noble residence — embodies the medieval character of the village, its stone walls and commanding presence woven into the fabric of the historic centre.

The castle is closely tied to the Nobili Vitelleschi family, whose name it bears. It is referenced throughout the site as a key architectural and historical landmark, forming part of the broader network of castles, fortresses, and baronial palaces that characterise the province of Rieti.

Within the Medieval Village

Labro's fan-shaped layout of narrow, winding stone streets creates a natural approach to the castle. The historic centre, restored by architect Ivan Van Mossevelde, provides the setting in which the Castello Nobili Vitelleschi reveals itself — a fortified palace that once served as both a noble residence and a defensive stronghold.

From its elevated position, the castle overlooks the Fuscello valley and, beyond, the waters of Lake Piediluco with the snow-capped Terminillo mountain chain rising in the distance.
